What do I need to know about my pets' teeth?

TeethMost people are oblivious to the fact that cats and dogs also require dental care.

Puppies have 28 temporary teeth that start coming in at about four weeks of age.  The milk teeth then fall out between 14 to 30 weeks and they are then replaced by 42 adult teeth.

Adult teeth should stay clean and free of any calculi build up.  Calculi build-up usually occurs around the big molar teeth at the back of the mouth because the tongue tends to clean the front teeth more effectively than the teeth at the back of the mouth.

Smaller dogs for example Yorkies, Min Pins, Pekinese, and Toy Poms tend to have frequent plaque and calculi build-up, causing their breath to become smelly and unpleasant. Dirty teeth can have profoundly serious health complications for smaller dogs.

The constant inflammation of the gingiva is painful, causing a permanent bad taste in their mouth, rotten teeth, and can even cause systemic problems such as heart and kidney problems.

To prevent plaque and calculi build up some special diets have been formulated to help clean the teeth.  The teeth can also be brushed daily which could be exceedingly difficult to do for most people that have a multiple pet household.

My Pets Vet specialises in scaling and cleaning your pets’ teeth that will remove any excess plaque and calculi build up ensuring that your pet stays healthy.
